Frequently asked questions
Can this tool see what's in my image?
No. It reads the file name, the image's width, height and shape, and the page topic you give it. That's why every draft is a starting point to correct against the picture. It never claims to recognise faces, objects or text in the image.
How do I write good alt text for an image?
A short, specific description of what the image shows and why it's there, usually under 125 characters, such as "Barista pouring latte art in a white cup". Skip "image of", and don't stuff keywords.
When should alt text be empty?
When the image is purely decorative, such as a divider or an icon next to text that says the same thing. Use alt="" (empty, not missing) so screen readers skip it.
Does alt text help SEO?
Yes. Alt text is the main way Google Images understands a picture, and it's what search engines read when an image is a link. Its first job is accessibility, so describe the image for people first.
Does the alt text generator upload my images?
No. Images you add are only shown in your browser. When you check a page, our server reads that public page's HTML to list its images; the images themselves load in your browser from the site.
