Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded when I compress them?
No. The compressor decodes and re-encodes each image inside your browser with the canvas API, so your files never leave your device and nothing is stored by Join Postly.
How does the target size mode work?
It encodes the image several times, narrowing the quality down by binary search until the file is just under your target. If even the lowest sensible quality is too big, it also scales the image down step by step and tells you the final dimensions.
Which format gives the smallest file?
For photos, WebP is usually 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, and AVIF can be smaller still where your browser can encode it. PNG is lossless, so it's best kept for logos, screenshots and images with transparency.
Does compressing remove photo metadata?
Yes. Re-encoding drops EXIF data such as the camera model and GPS location, which is good for privacy when you share photos online. Colour is kept in sRGB.
Why does a compressed PNG sometimes come out larger?
A PNG that was already optimised can grow when the browser saves it again. When the result would be bigger than your original, the tool keeps your original file and tells you so, unless you changed the format or the size.
