Frequently asked questions

Which pages should be in an XML sitemap?

Only pages you want in search results: ones that answer 200, are indexable and whose canonical points to themselves. This generator leaves out redirects, errors, noindex pages and pages that canonicalise to another URL.

Do changefreq and priority matter to Google?

Google says it ignores changefreq and priority. It does use lastmod when the dates are accurate. Bing and other search engines may still read all three, so they are optional here.

Why are some of my pages missing from the generated sitemap?

The crawler only finds pages that are linked from other pages, up to 500. Pages blocked by robots.txt, linked only through JavaScript or forms, or deeper than the limit aren't reached. Large sites should use their CMS's sitemap.

How do I submit a sitemap to Google?

Upload sitemap.xml to your site's root, open Google Search Console, go to Sitemaps, enter the URL and submit. Also add a Sitemap: line with the full URL to robots.txt so every search engine finds it.
