Frequently asked questions

Is Base64 a form of encryption?

No. Base64 only turns bytes into plain characters so they can travel through text-only places like JSON, email or a URL. Anyone can decode it, so never use it to hide passwords or keys.

What is URL-safe Base64?

A variant that uses - and _ instead of + and / and usually drops the = padding, so the text can go in URLs and file names without being escaped. JWT tokens use it. The decoder here accepts both kinds.

Why is Base64 bigger than the original file?

Every 3 bytes become 4 characters, so Base64 is about a third larger. That's why only small images, icons and fonts are worth inlining as data URLs.

Why does my decoded text look like random symbols?

The Base64 holds binary data, such as an image, rather than text, or the text used another character set. The tool tells you when the result isn't valid UTF-8 and lets you download it as a file.
