Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between encodeURI and encodeURIComponent?

encodeURI is for a whole address, so it keeps characters like : / ? & and = that give a URL its structure. encodeURIComponent is for one value inside a URL, so it encodes those characters too.

Why are spaces sometimes %20 and sometimes +?

In paths and most URLs a space is %20. In HTML form data (application/x-www-form-urlencoded) and many query strings it's written as +. Choose Form mode to use +.

Why do I get an error when decoding a URL?

A % must be followed by two hexadecimal digits, like %2F. A lone %, or codes that don't form valid UTF-8, can't be decoded. The tool shows the part that's broken.
