How to use the Favicon Generator

  1. 1Upload a square logo (PNG or SVG works best), or switch to Text and type a letter or an emoji.
  2. 2Pick the background, the shape and, for text icons, the colours.
  3. 3Check the previews at 16, 32 and 180 pixels to make sure the icon is readable when small.
  4. 4Download the ZIP with all files, upload them to your site's root folder and paste the HTML into the head of your pages.

Frequently asked questions

What sizes does a favicon need?

Browsers use 16×16 and 32×32 pixels in tabs, 48×48 on Windows, 180×180 for the Apple touch icon, and 192×192 and 512×512 for Android and installed web apps. This generator makes all of them.

Do I still need a favicon.ico file?

It's still worth having. Some browsers, RSS readers and tools ask for /favicon.ico directly. The .ico file made here contains 16, 32 and 48 pixel images in one file.

What image works best for a favicon?

A simple, square mark with strong contrast. Detailed logos and small text become unreadable at 16 pixels, so use your logo's symbol or first letter.

Why doesn't my new favicon show up?

Browsers cache favicons for a long time. After uploading, open the icon's address directly, refresh it, or test in a private window. Google Search can take a few weeks to show a new favicon.
