Frequently asked questions

Can a page have more than one H1?

HTML allows it and Google says it copes, but one H1 that names the page's main topic is clearest for readers and accessibility tools. Turn extra H1s into H2s.

Should the H1 be the same as the title tag?

They can match or be close. The title is written for search results and can include your brand; the H1 is the on-page headline. Both should describe the same topic.

My page has an H1 logo image: is that OK?

Only if the image has descriptive alt text, which becomes the heading's text. It's usually better to use a text H1 with the page's real topic and keep the logo out of it.
