Hreflang and canonical checker

Check a page's international SEO setup. The checker reads the canonical and hreflang tags in the HTML and the HTTP Link header, validates every language code, then visits up to 10 alternate pages to confirm they answer, are indexable and link back.

How to use the Canonical & Hreflang Checker

  1. 1Enter one language version of a page, such as yoursite.com/en/pricing.
  2. 2Open the Hreflang tab to see invalid codes, a missing self-reference or x-default, and return links.
  3. 3Open the Canonical tab to check that the canonical points to the right, working URL.
  4. 4Fix the problems on every language version, then check another version to confirm.

Frequently asked questions

What is a hreflang return link?

Every page in a hreflang set must link to all the others, and they must link back. If the French page lists the English one but the English page doesn't list the French one, Google ignores that pair.

Which language codes does hreflang accept?

An ISO 639-1 language code such as en, fr or de, optionally with an ISO 3166-1 region such as en-gb or fr-ca, or x-default. Region alone isn't valid, and the UK's region code is GB.

Can hreflang and canonical tags conflict?

Yes. Each language version should canonicalise to itself. If the French page's canonical points to the English page, Google treats it as a duplicate and ignores its hreflang.
