Redirect chain checker
Enter a URL to follow it hop by hop: each redirect's status code (301, 302, 307, 308), where it points and how long it takes, up to the final page. Loops, long chains, temporary redirects and HTTP-to-HTTPS problems are flagged, and you can compare all four versions of your domain.
How to use the Redirect Chain Checker
- 1Enter the URL to check, such as an old page address or a short link.
- 2Tick the box to also check the http://, https://, www and non-www versions of the address.
- 3Read each hop's status code and destination, and the warnings below the chain.
- 4Fix chains by pointing the first URL straight at the final address with one 301.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a 301 and a 302 redirect?
A 301 says the page has moved permanently, so search engines move the old URL's signals to the new one. A 302 is temporary: the old URL is kept. Use 301 (or 308) for permanent moves.
How many redirects in a chain are too many?
Aim for one. Google follows up to 10 hops but every hop slows the page down and wastes crawl budget, so update old redirects to point straight at the final URL.
What causes a redirect loop?
Two rules sending visitors back and forth, such as one rule adding www and another removing it, or HTTPS forced both by the server and by a CDN set to Flexible SSL. Browsers show "too many redirects".
