Microphone test: check your mic online

Check that your microphone works and sounds right before a call, podcast or video. See a live level meter, choose between microphones, record a short clip and play it back to hear yourself. The sound stays on your device and is never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Is my voice recorded or uploaded?

Nothing is uploaded. The level meter reads the sound in your browser, and the test recording is kept in this tab's memory only, so it's gone when you delete it, record again or close the tab.

Why does the level meter not move when I speak?

The wrong microphone may be selected, it may be muted with a switch or key, or your system may block microphone access for your browser. Pick another device from the list and check your system privacy settings.

What is a good microphone level?

Your normal speaking voice should peak somewhere between about −20 and −6 dB on the meter. Much quieter and you'll sound distant; hitting 0 dB means the sound is clipping and will distort.

Why does my recording sound different from my voice?

You hear your own voice partly through your skull, so recordings always sound a little higher and thinner. Echo, background noise or a laptop mic far away make it worse; a headset helps.
