XML sitemap validator
Check a sitemap before search engines do. Enter its address, or just your domain, and the validator reads the file, checks the XML, the URLs, lastmod dates, changefreq and priority values, sums up child sitemaps of an index and tests a sample of 20 URLs for errors and redirects.
How to use the Sitemap Validator
- 1Enter your sitemap's address, or just your domain: we look in robots.txt and at /sitemap.xml.
- 2Read the problems list. XML errors show the line number so you can find them quickly.
- 3Check the status sample: every URL in a sitemap should answer 200 without redirecting.
- 4Or switch to Paste XML to check a sitemap you're still writing, right in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
What are the limits of an XML sitemap?
50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed per file. Bigger sites split their URLs over several sitemaps and list them in a sitemap index file, which can hold up to 50,000 sitemaps.
What date format does lastmod need?
W3C Datetime: a date such as 2026-10-11, or a date and time with a time zone such as 2026-10-11T09:30:00+00:00. Other formats, like 11/10/2026, are invalid.
Should a sitemap list URLs that redirect?
No. List only the final URL that answers 200. Redirected, broken and noindex URLs waste crawl attention and make search engines trust your sitemap less.
