YouTube tag generator with a 500-character counter

Get tag ideas from your video's keyword, add your own, and keep the list inside YouTube's 500-character limit. The counter adds commas and the quotes YouTube puts around multi-word tags, so what fits here fits in YouTube Studio.

How to use the YouTube Title, Description & Tags Generator

  1. 1Type the main keyword, phrased the way people search, such as "bake sourdough bread".
  2. 2Pick the video type and fill in the optional slots: who it's for, the result and a number.
  3. 3Choose a title under about 60 characters, then edit the description and add your timestamps.
  4. 4Copy the tags. The counter uses YouTube's own way of counting, including commas and quotes.

Frequently asked questions

How many tags should a YouTube video have?

There's no ideal number. Five to fifteen relevant tags, starting with your exact keyword and its common variations or misspellings, is plenty; filling all 500 characters doesn't help.

Why does YouTube Studio say my tags are too long?

YouTube counts commas between tags and adds two characters for each tag with a space. A list that looks like 480 characters can come out over 500, which this counter shows before you paste.

Can I copy tags from other videos?

Tags of other channels are hidden in YouTube Studio, and copying competitors' names into your tags can break YouTube's spam rules. Describe your own video accurately instead.
