H2 heading checker
List every H2 heading on a page and check them: missing H2s, empty or repeated ones, very long ones and H2s that come before the H1. The full heading outline is shown too, so you can see how each section is structured.
How to use the Heading Structure Checker
- 1Enter the address of the page to check.
- 2Read the counts per level and the H1 text next to the page title.
- 3Go through the issues: missing H1, several H1s, skipped levels or empty headings.
- 4Scan the indented outline and copy it for your notes or a content brief.
Frequently asked questions
How many H2 headings should a page have?
One per main section. A short page might have two or three; a long guide might have ten. What matters is that each H2 clearly names its section, so readers can skim.
Should my keyword be in the H2 headings?
Where it reads naturally, in one or two of them. Use related phrases and questions for the rest; repeating the exact keyword in every H2 reads badly and doesn't help.
Can a page have H2s without an H1?
It works in browsers, but it's clearer to have one H1 for the page's main topic and H2s for its sections. Screen reader users jump between headings, so a logical outline helps them.
