HTTP to HTTPS redirect checker
Check that the insecure http:// version of your site sends visitors to https:// in one permanent redirect. Enter your domain to see every hop, whether it uses a 301 or 308, how many steps it takes and whether HSTS is switched on.
How to use the Redirect Chain Checker
- 1Enter the URL to check, such as an old page address or a short link.
- 2Tick the box to also check the http://, https://, www and non-www versions of the address.
- 3Read each hop's status code and destination, and the warnings below the chain.
- 4Fix chains by pointing the first URL straight at the final address with one 301.
Frequently asked questions
Should HTTP to HTTPS be a 301 or a 302 redirect?
A permanent one: 301, or 308. A temporary 302 or 307 tells search engines the http:// address might come back, so ranking signals may not move fully to https://.
What is HSTS and do I need it?
HTTP Strict Transport Security is a response header telling browsers to always use https:// for your site, so they skip the insecure first request. Add it once https:// works everywhere on the site.
Why does my site redirect several times before reaching HTTPS?
Often http:// goes to https:// and then to www (or the other way round) as separate steps. Redirect http:// straight to the final address, such as https://www.example.com, in one hop.
