Mobile-friendly test

Check whether a page is set up for phones. We read it with a mobile browser's user agent and check the viewport tag, zoom blocking, responsive media queries, small font sizes, fixed widths that cause sideways scrolling and plugins, and say clearly what can't be measured without rendering.

How to use the Mobile-Friendly Test

  1. 1Enter the page address. It's read with a mobile user agent, as a phone would request it.
  2. 2Fix any red items first: a missing viewport tag or plugins break the page on phones.
  3. 3Review the amber items, such as text under 12px and fixed widths, in your CSS.
  4. 4Check the list of things that need a rendered page, and test those on a real phone.

Frequently asked questions

Why did Google retire its Mobile-Friendly Test?

Google shut down the Mobile-Friendly Test and its Search Console report in December 2023, saying most sites are now mobile-friendly. Mobile usability still matters: Google indexes the mobile version of every page.

What makes a page mobile-friendly?

A viewport tag with width=device-width, a layout that adapts to narrow screens, text of at least 16px for body copy, buttons and links big enough to tap with space between them, and no content wider than the screen.

Can this test measure tap target size?

Not reliably: tap targets depend on the final layout after CSS and JavaScript run. This test reads the HTML and CSS only and says so. Check tap targets on a real phone or in your browser's device mode.
