Frequently asked questions
What is the formula for percentage increase?
(new − old) ÷ old × 100. From 80 to 100 is (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%. A negative answer means a decrease.
How do I find the original price before a percentage increase?
Divide the new price by 1 plus the increase. If a price is £120 after a 20% rise, the original was £120 ÷ 1.2 = £100.
How do I calculate growth over several months?
Compare the last value with the first for the total change. For an average monthly rate, take (last ÷ first) to the power of 1 ÷ months, subtract 1 and multiply by 100.
