Frequently asked questions

How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by 1 plus the rate. At 20%, £100 × 1.2 = £120, so the VAT is £20. At 5%, £100 × 1.05 = £105.

How do I work out VAT from a total that includes VAT?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate to get the net price, then subtract. At 20%, £120 ÷ 1.2 = £100, so the VAT is £20. Taking 20% off £120 gives the wrong answer (£24).

What is the VAT fraction?

It's the share of a VAT-inclusive price that is VAT: rate ÷ (100 + rate). At 20% it's 1/6, at 5% it's 1/21. Multiply a gross amount by it to get the VAT directly.

Are the country VAT rates in the calculator always up to date?

They're the standard rates we know of as of 2026, shown as shortcuts. Rates change and many goods have reduced rates, so check your tax authority's website before you rely on one.
