Frequently asked questions
What is the formula for engagement rate?
Engagement rate = total engagements ÷ followers (or reach, or impressions) × 100. Engagements are usually likes, comments, shares and saves; some people also include clicks. Use the same method every time you compare.
Should I calculate engagement rate by followers or by reach?
By reach tells you how people who actually saw the post reacted, so it's fairer for comparing posts. By followers is easier to get for any account, including competitors, so it's used for benchmarks.
What is a good engagement rate?
It depends on the platform, niche and account size: smaller accounts often see higher rates. Treat published benchmarks as rough guides, and compare your rate with your own past posts first.
