Compare text for differences
Find every difference between two versions of an article, caption, email or contract, word by word. Additions are marked in green and deletions in red within the flowing text, so even a changed comma stands out. The texts are compared privately in your browser.
How to use the Diff Checker
- 1Paste the original text on the left and the changed text on the right.
- 2Choose Lines to compare line by line, or Words for prose and small edits.
- 3Pick Side by side or Inline, and turn on Ignore case or Ignore whitespace if you need to.
- 4Read the highlighted changes and the counts, then copy the result as a patch.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compare two documents for changes?
Copy the text from each document and paste one into each box. Word mode highlights each added or removed word, which suits prose better than whole lines.
Can I compare text from Word or Google Docs?
Yes. Copy the text from each document and paste it in. Formatting such as bold and fonts isn't compared, only the words and punctuation.
Does compare text show moved paragraphs?
A moved paragraph shows as removed in one place and added in another, because the comparison looks for the shortest set of edits rather than tracking moves.
