Frequently asked questions
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time uses an average adult silent reading speed of 238 words per minute; speaking time uses 150 words per minute, a typical pace for presentations and video voice-overs.
What is a good Flesch Reading Ease score?
60–70 is plain English that most adults read easily, and 70+ is very easy. Scores under 50 are hard going for general readers. Short sentences and shorter words raise the score.
How does the counter decide what a word is?
A word is any run of letters or numbers, with apostrophes and hyphens kept inside it, so "don't" and "e-mail" each count as one. Emoji and punctuation don't count as words.
Is the text I paste saved anywhere?
No. All counting happens in your browser and nothing is sent or stored, so it's safe for drafts, essays and client work.
