Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between WHOIS and RDAP?

Both describe who registered a domain and when. RDAP returns structured data over HTTPS with standard fields, and since 2025 it has replaced WHOIS as the required service for generic domains like .com.

Can a WHOIS lookup show who owns a website?

Usually not any more. Registrant names and emails are redacted for privacy by most registries. You'll see the registrar, dates and status, which is often enough to plan a purchase or a transfer.

How do I find out when a domain expires?

Look at the expiry date in the result. Domains are usually renewed automatically, so an expiry date only means the owner has paid until then, not that the name will become free.
