Frequently asked questions
What is an AVIF file?
A modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It often makes files half the size of JPG at similar quality, but support outside web browsers is still patchy.
Can every browser convert AVIF to JPG?
Every current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari can open AVIF, which is all the conversion needs. Very old browsers can't, and the tool says so if a file won't open.
Will converting AVIF to JPG make the file larger?
Usually yes, because JPG is less efficient. Lower the quality slider to around 80 if size matters; the difference is hard to see on photos.
