Yes. AVIF supports transparency and so does PNG, so transparent areas carry across.

Does converting AVIF to PNG improve quality?

No. PNG stores exactly what the AVIF contains without further loss, but it can't add back detail the AVIF compression removed.

Which apps can't open AVIF files?

Older versions of Photoshop, Microsoft Office, Windows Photos and many print and upload services. Converting to PNG or JPG solves it.
