Frequently asked questions

Why does PDF to text show nothing for my file?

The pages are probably scans or photos: they hold a picture of the text, not the letters themselves. Extracting text from pictures needs OCR (optical character recognition), which this free tool doesn't offer. The tool flags pages that look scanned.

Does PDF to text keep the layout?

It keeps the reading order and line breaks the PDF stores, page by page. Columns, tables and exact spacing aren't rebuilt, so multi-column pages may need a little tidying after you paste them.

Can it extract Urdu, Arabic or Hindi text from a PDF?

Yes, when the PDF stores real text in those scripts. Some PDFs made by older software store glyphs without the matching letters; then the text comes out garbled, and only OCR can recover it.
