Frequently asked questions

What is the current VAT rate in the UK?

The standard rate is 20%. A reduced rate of 5% applies to things like home energy and children's car seats, and a zero rate to most food, books and children's clothes. Some items are exempt from VAT altogether.

When do I have to register for VAT in the UK?

When your VAT-taxable turnover goes over the registration threshold in a rolling 12 months, or you expect it to in the next 30 days. HMRC publishes the current threshold, which was £90,000 from April 2024.

How does HMRC want VAT rounded?

HMRC lets you round the VAT on each line or on the invoice total, to the nearest penny, as long as you're consistent. This calculator rounds the VAT to the penny and keeps net + VAT = gross.
