Character counter
Count characters with and without spaces as you type, along with words, sentences and paragraphs. Emoji and accented letters count as one character, the way you see them, so the total matches what most apps and forms show.
How to use the Word Counter & Readability
- 1Paste or type your text into the box. Everything updates as you type.
- 2Read the totals: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and reading time.
- 3Open Readability to see the Flesch Reading Ease and grade level for the whole text and for each paragraph.
- 4Check the platform limits table before you post, then copy the text when it fits.
Frequently asked questions
Do spaces count as characters?
Usually, yes. Most character limits, including social networks and SMS, count spaces. The counter shows both totals, with and without spaces, for forms that count differently.
How are emoji counted in the character count?
Each emoji you see counts as one character, even flags and skin-tone emoji made of several code points. Some systems, like X and SMS, count them as more, so check the platform's own rules.
How many characters is 100 words?
About 500–600 characters with spaces for typical English text, since the average word is around 5 letters plus a space. Paste your text to get the exact number.
