Frequently asked questions

What is the Flesch-Kincaid grade level?

It estimates the US school grade needed to understand a text, from average sentence length and syllables per word. Grade 8 means a typical 13–14 year old can follow it, a good target for the web.

How are syllables counted in the readability score?

With a rule-based estimate that counts vowel groups and adjusts for silent endings like "-es" and "-ed". It is accurate for most English words and close enough for a reliable score.

Do readability formulas work for languages other than English?

The Flesch formulas were built for English, so scores for other languages are only a rough guide. Word, character and reading-time counts work for any language.
