CNAME record lookup
Check where a host name points with a CNAME lookup: www, shop, blog or a verification name. See the target, its TTL and the A and AAAA records behind it, read live from public DNS, to confirm a website, CDN or email setup is pointing the right way.
How to use the DNS Lookup
- 1Enter a domain such as example.com, or a host name like www.example.com or _dmarc.example.com.
- 2Read each record type with its values and TTL, the time resolvers may cache it.
- 3Switch to Propagation to see whether Cloudflare and Google already return the same values after a change.
- 4Copy the records as zone-file lines, or share the result link.
Frequently asked questions
What is a CNAME record?
An alias: it says a host name such as www.example.com is another name for a different host, such as example.netlify.app. Browsers then look up the target's IP address.
Can I put a CNAME on my root domain?
Standard DNS doesn't allow a CNAME at the root (example.com) alongside other records. Many DNS providers offer CNAME flattening or ALIAS records to get the same effect.
Why does my CNAME lookup show nothing?
The name may use A records instead of a CNAME, the record may not have spread yet, or you looked up the root domain when the CNAME is on www. Try the exact host name the service asked you to set.
