How to use the Speech to Text
- 1Open this page in Chrome or Edge on a computer or Android phone.
- 2Choose the language you'll speak in.
- 3Press Start and allow the microphone when asked. Speak naturally; grey text is still being recognised.
- 4Press Stop, tidy the transcript if needed, then copy it or download it as a text file.
Frequently asked questions
Which browsers support speech to text?
Chrome and Edge on computers and Android support it best. Safari has partial support on recent versions. Firefox doesn't offer speech recognition to websites, so the tool explains that instead of failing silently.
Where does my voice go when I use speech to text?
Not to Join Postly. Chrome sends the audio to Google's speech service and Edge to Microsoft's, because that is how the browser's recognition works. The transcript only appears in your page; Join Postly never receives the audio or the text.
How do I add punctuation when dictating?
Browser recognition adds little punctuation on its own. Pause between sentences, then add commas and full stops while editing; the tool capitalises the start of each sentence for you.
Why does speech recognition stop after a while?
Browsers end a session after a pause or a few minutes. The tool restarts listening automatically while Start is on, so you can keep talking.
