Frequently asked questions

What must a UK VAT invoice include?

HMRC asks for a unique invoice number, your business name and address, your VAT registration number, the invoice date, the time of supply if different, the customer's name and address, a description of each item, the rate of VAT and the totals. Check HMRC's VAT invoice guidance for the full list.

Do I need to show VAT if I'm not VAT registered?

No, and you mustn't charge it. Set the tax rate to 0 or leave it empty and don't add a VAT number. Many sole traders add a note such as "Not VAT registered" to avoid questions.

How long should UK payment terms be?

30 days is common, and you can set any due date. If you agreed nothing, UK late payment rules generally treat business-to-business invoices as due after 30 days, after which statutory interest can apply.
